Recovering the Sacred: An Introduction to Tantra Yoga and the Healing Energies of Mind and Spirit
Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11, 2010 from 1:00 until 5:00 PM
Cost: $60 for each session or $100 for both sessions
Facilitator: Dr. Rolf Sovik, Psy.D.
Human life is a search for the boundless, for a deep source of happiness and healing. Over thousands of years that search has led to yoga; the practice of postures, meditation, and a balanced inner life. When the many techniques of yoga are skillfully woven together, the result is tantra yoga. This workshop will illustrate how tantra yoga is a means for opening doors to health, vitality, and spiritual contentment. On Saturday, the focus will be on awakening vibrant self-awareness through practices focused on the spinal axis and its various centers. On Sunday, contemplate the role of inner life in the healing process, and develop tools and a spirit of optimism that will see you through when your health is less than its best.
Rolf Sovik, Psy.D., began his study of yoga/meditation in 1972. Under the tutelage of Swami Rama and Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, he was trained in the US as well as in India and Nepal. He is the author of "Turning Inward: The Journey to Meditation" and co-author of the award-winning "Yoga: Mastering the Basics". He writes regularly for Yoga Plus Magazine and serves as president of the Himalayan Institute. He holds a doctorate in clinical psychology as well as degrees in philosophy and music. |

Arm Balance Workshop: Lotus Power: Finding Beauty and Power in the Bloom
Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Cost: $40
Facilitator: Shri
Overcoming all odds, the lotus rises above the murk of the swamp and fulfills its destiny by blooming. Its beauty nourishes all who see it.
Arm balances redefine our relationship to the Earth. By learning to support ourselves with our own two hands, we transcend the limitations of gravity and discover authentic personal power and embody the beauty of the bloom.
Arm balances are a natural outcome of an athletic practice. With time and practice, the bloom happens spontaneously, yet it is possible to pave the way for that growth with mindful preparation.
In this workshop we will:
-
Explore the foundational techniques to build the strength and flexibility necessary for arm balances and to keep the hands and shoulders healthy and injury free.
- Work with a progression of modifications for practice of: Tolasana (scales), Lolasana (pendant), Jump Thru and Jump Back Vinyasa, Bakasana (crane), Koundinyasana (scissor pose), Vishvamitrasana (running man), Vashistasana (side plank), Eka Pada Sirshasana (elephant trunk), Astavakrasana (crooked in 8), Tittibasana (insect), Buja Pidasana (arm pressure), Forearm Balance, Headstand and Handstand. (Feel free to request poses not here.)
- All levels are welcome. We are working with these poses in a workshop fashion, paving the way for growth, some poses you will be able to do, most you will not. "Be as little children", Come, Play and Bloom!
